Supporting Mathematics at University

Engineering – University of the West of England

Working with the University of the West of England and funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, MEI has conducted a successful pilot project to develop online resources to support UWE's 'Engineering Mathematics 1' course. This course is taken by all first year Engineering Undergraduates at UWE. The online resources are tailored directly to the course.

A paper on this pilot project, by Dr Kevin Golden (UWE), and Charlie Stripp (MEI), was presented by Dr Kevin Golden at the IMA conference on the Mathematical Education of Engineers, held at Loughborough University on 11/12 April 2006.

An article written by Kevin Golden, Charlie Stripp and Stephen Lee entitled 'Encouraging student use of feedback, reflection and engagement through web-based learning support' was published in Vol. 7 No. 2 of the Higher Education Academy Maths, Stats and O.R. Network publication MSOR Connections.

As highlighted in that article, UWE have now extended their use of web-based materials by adapting the MEI resources to support students on a distance learning engineering mathematics module. Furthermore, research is currently being conducted into 'The Impact of Web-Based Materials on Student Learning and Course Delivery in Engineering Mathematics' in the context of the 'Technology Acceptance Model'.

Multi-Discipline – Warwick University

MEI is currently working with The University of Warwick to structure MEI's resources within the university's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This will enable students from across a wide range of university disciplines, to gain access to MEI's online mathematics resources.
